Water long exposure

slow running water

17mm, f/16, 30,0s

On this day I went out to test my new set of polarization and ND filters. So, my goal was to find some running water…

Especially in the extremely dry phase we had this summer it was not that easy to find a spot.

long exposure running water

Log exposure with small waterfall

To call this a waterfall is quite the strecht, but a low angle and wet feet do the trick here.

In the first long exposure images I combined the ND filter with the polarization filter and tried to get rid of all reflections. This resulted in a very smooth and clear water.

Additionally, I tried to visualize the effect of a polarization filter and why it is so helpflull. Especially with landscape and water photography. The polarization filter is one of the only filters, which is nearly impossibly to recreate in post using Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. While I can add a color tint afterwards or even recreate the effect of a ND filter by darkening only the sky or softening the water (in the last case it is quite hard to come close to using a real filter), it is nearly impossible to get rid of reflections and show what lies beneath.

To show the effect of the polarization filter I shot the three images bellow: The first one is without a filter and in the other two I used the filter to get rid of the reflections and also to get as much of them as possible. All three images are without editing.
